Delhi is India’s national capital territory, covering about 1,483 km² in north-central India.
It includes the dense historic area of Old Delhi and the planned administrative district of New Delhi, which was inaugurated as the capital in 1931.
The city lies roughly 160 km south of the Himalayas, primarily along the Yamuna River’s west bank. Summers from mid-March to June bring temperatures up to 45 °C, followed by the humid monsoon season. The 2011 census recorded a population of 16.75 million, reflecting Delhi’s role as a major political and transport center.
